Wolves, Saints draw 1-1 in season finale

LACEY, Wash.—Despite a pair of threats for the golden goal in the second overtime period, the Western Oregon University soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw in the season finale at Saint Martin's on Saturday.

With the result, Western Oregon ends the year with a 5-9-3 overall record and a 3-7-2 mark in GNAC play. After being picked to place eighth in the league's preseason poll, the Wolves added a win to their conference total from a year ago to finish the season in seventh place in the conference standings.

Western Oregon outshot Saint Martin's (5-13-0, 1-11-0 GNAC) 9-to-2 in the first half with five attempts on goal to force SMU keeper Ali Koehler to come up with multiple saves.

Working in the 60th minute, senior Amber Whitmore broke through with a run on the left flank that culminated with a one-on-one with Koehler near the end line. After a subtle touch inside to beat the keeper, Whitmore slid the ball into the far netting for her first score of the season.

The Saints, however, evened the match in the 90th minute as Gloria Petrie found the net at the 89:19 mark.

Heading to overtime for the fifth time this season, Western Oregon created the two best chances in the extra sessions with Sydney Thomas sailing a 20-yard shot over the crossbar in the 106th minute and Selene Konyn delivering a pair of dangerous corner kicks in the waning moments.

Western Oregon outshot the Saints 17-to-13 in the match.  Dacia Alexander unleashed four of the team's shots with three attempts on frame. Konyn, Thomas, Whitmore and Alyssa Tomasini all generated multiple shot attempts for the Wolves.

Koehler went on to record seven saves while WOU counterpart Alex Qualls made five stops in the match.
