Simon Fraser scores big in second half in 3-1 win

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Simon Fraser Clan's women's soccer team rode an offensive surge in the second half to a 3-1 win on Saturday over the Western Oregon Wolves at WOU Soccer Field.

Two days after tying No. 10-ranked Concordia University, Simon Fraser (6-3-1, 4-1-1 GNAC) tallied a 6-2 edge in shots in the first half, but in an evenly played half, several crosses provided Western Oregon (4-6-2, 2-4-1 GNAC) great early looks.

Western Oregon had perhaps their best chance to break through in the first half with Isabelle Crieghton's cross into Amber Whitmore. With three minutes remaining in the half, Creighton got the opportunity past SFU keeper Nicole Anderson before it rolled tantalizingly across the face of goal and past Whitmore's outstretched foot.

All of the scoring came after the 60th minute of the match and three of the four total goals rolled out in a seven-minute span.

The Clan rattled off consecutive goals in less than three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Carli Grosso came up with the first after a corner and a deflection inside the box for her first goal of the season. Three minutes later, Christina Dickson received a free kick crossed in from the right side that she put on the side netting for the score.

After just two shots in the first half, Western Oregon's offense exploded for eight shots, including four on goal, in the second half to make several late pushes.

Hannah Cabral, a freshman out of Hawaii, delivered her first collegiate goal for the Wolves later in the 71st minute. On a corner kick in from Alyssa Tomasini, Cabral found herself open on the far post to beat out Anderson for the lone goal of the match for the Wolves.

Creighton also delivered two shots with one on goal in her 41 minutes of work.

Western Oregon will close out its four-game home stand on Tuesday, Oct. 9 against Saint Martin's. Opening kick against the Saints is set for 3 p.m. at WOU Soccer Field.
