SEASIDE, Calif.—Powered by a five-run first, CSU Monterey Bay defeated Western Oregon, 11-3, in the opening game of a three-game series played at the Otter Sports Complex.
With the win, Cal State Monterey Bay improved to 4-0 on the season while Western Oregon fell to 0-5.
The two teams will turn around and play a Saturday doubleheader with an opening pitch set for 11 a.m.
The Otters sent eight batters to the plate in the opening stanza and broke the game open on a two-out bases-loaded double by Hayden Duer. Teammate Jordan Esponso followed with a 2-run homer to center field to make it a 5-0 spread.The Wolves responded with a three-run second only to see the Otters plate at least one in each of the next four frames.
Drey McInnes provided two of the WOU runs with a homer to right field with
Justin Wakem on board after clubbing a two-out double.
Gabe Katitch picked up the win after tossing five innings for CSUMB. Katitch struck out four and walked one. Connor McCord was tagged for the loss for the Wolves.
