Game Recap: Baseball |

Wolves split series versus MSUB

PORTLAND, Ore.—Closing out its first 'home' series of the season, the Western Oregon University team split a pair of GNAC baseball games against MSU Billings on Saturday.

With the results of the games played at Porter Park, Western Oregon closed out the day with a 6-9 record and a 2-2 mark in GNAC play. The Wolves are set to play a home series against Central Washington March 17-18 in their next outing.

Game 1: Western Oregon 5, MSU Billings 3
Down 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third, the Wolves scored five unanswered runs to stake a 5-3 win over the Yellowjackets in the opener on Saturday.

MSUB scored a single run in the first and added a pair of scores in the third via bases loaded walks. The Wolves escaped additional damage as pitcher Grant Fisher got out of the jam of his own making with a pop up to center.

Using five pitchers, the WOU bullpen tossed six shutout innings to close the game and allow the offense a chance for redemption. The Wolves broke through in the third on an RBI grounder from Connor McCord and went on to knot the game at 3-3 on a Justin Spinner single to left that plated Jay Leverett and Griffey Halle.

The Wolves completed the comeback with Cody Dykstra and Jacob Martinez driving in runs in the sixth.

Entering the game in the sixth, Kolby Bales was credited with the win after two innings of shutout ball. Jacob Fricke picked up the save after facing one over the minimum over the final two stanzas.

Game 2: Western Oregon 1, MSU Billings 2
Despite a complete-game gem by Craig Grubbe, MSU Billings earned a split on Saturday with a 2-1 win in the nightcap over Western Oregon.

Trailing 2-0 heading to the seventh, the Wolves loaded the bases against closer Travis Edgar with Joe Whisler at the plate. On a 1-2 pitch, Whisler laced a single to left to plate Connor McCord, but the tying run was eliminated at the plate as an outfield assist by Kade Hall ended the game.

With little room for error, MSUB starter Jared Winslow registered the win after allowing just one hit over six innings. Winslow struck out two and faced just 19 batters in the stint before turning the ball to Edgar.

With two outs, the Wolves managed to load the bases against Edgar and scored its lone run on the final play. Grubbe struck out five and allowed two runs on five hits.
