Wolves open GNAC play with Western Washington sweep

BELLINGHAM, Wash.—Opening up conference play on the road, Western Oregon University defeated Western Washington, 6-3 and 4-3, in GNAC softball action on Saturday.

Western Oregon (12-7) will continue its trip north to face Simon Fraser University on Sunday. Opening pitch against the Clan is set for 12 p.m. in Burnaby, B.C.

Game 1:  Western Oregon 6, Western Washington 3
Handed a 3-0 lead, Western Oregon's Haley Fabian hurled a complete game to lead the Wolves to a 6-3 win in the GNAC opener against Western Washington.

A triple to right-center by Tyler Creach in the top of the third provided the first two runs for the Wolves as Kennedy Coy and Jenna Kelly scored on the drive. Zoe Clark added a solo homer to center in the fourth to provide the 3-0 lead for Fabian.

The Vikings used three hits and a WOU error in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to one (3-2), but the Wolves responded immediately with a 3-run fifth behind RBI swings by Ryanne Huffman and Cheyanne Rimer.

Fabian struck out five batters in the seven inning performance. Improving to 3-3 on the year, Fabian allowed nine hits and issued one walk.

Game 2:  Western Oregon 4, Western Washington 3
Down 3-2 in the sixth, a Nikki Miller home run to center provided the decisive run as Western Oregon completed the sweep with a 4-3 win over Western Washington.

Miller connected on the first offering from WWU starter Shearyna Labasan to give WOU the late lead while starter Lizzet Dominguez held the Vikings hitless over the final two frames to preserve the win.

Down 1-0 after one, Jenna Kelly and Sydney Bowers delivered RBI hots in the fourth for WOU's initial lead. The Vikings stormed back with two runs in the home half of the fifth before Miller's heroics.

Dominguez gave WOU its second complete game performance of the day with a seven-inning outing. Dominguez struck out three and walked two to improve to 5-1 on the season
