Wolves split at CWU to take road series

ELLENSBURG, Wash.—In a matchup of the top two teams in the GNAC, Western Oregon managed to win the four-game series with a Sunday split at Central Washington.

After sweeping Saturday's action, Western Oregon (9-10, 9-3 GNAC) posted a 9-0 win in Sunday's opener before Central Washington (13-9, 8-4 GNAC) avoided the weekend sweep with a 6-2 in the finale.

Western Oregon will return to action with a single game against Lewis-Clark State College on Thursday, March 22. The team will turn around for a four-game road series in Portland at Concordia University on March 24-25.

Game 1 – Western Oregon def. Central Washington, 9-0
Powered by two home runs and a seven-inning stint from starter Jacob Fricke, Western Oregon won its third straight in the series with a 9-0 victory in the early game against Central Washington.

The Wolves scored in each of the first four innings and six out of the nine frames for the blowout win.

Five different WOU batters recorded multiple hits as team finished with a 12 to 7 edge in total hits over the Wildcats. Leadoff hitter Jacob Martinez set the table with a 2 for 4 game that included three RBI. Jared McDonald scored on three occasions, including on a 6th-inning home run. Connor McCord went 2 for 4 with two RBI.

Fricke (1-1) pitched through the 7th inning and struck out seven batters while scattering five hits and a single walk.

Game 2 – Central Washington def. Western Oregon, 7-2
Using a 3-run homer by James Smith, Central Washington avoided the four-game sweep with a 7-2 win in the series finale against Western Oregon.

The Wildcats plated a single run in the 2nd via a Parton double down the left-field line and planted a 4-0 advantage in the very next inning on Smith's bomb.

The Wolves cut the deficit in half in the top of the 4th with Connor McCord clubbing an RBI double and later scoring on a wild pitch. WOU missed an opportunity to add to its tally by leaving two runners on as CWU starter Seth Pedersen forced a comebacker to the mound to end the rally.

Down 6-2, the Wolves threatened again in the 6th but were wiped off the basepaths on a double play.

Pedersen (1-1) struck out seven batters in the 7-inning complete game. The Wildcats outhit the Wolves, 11 to 5.
