MONMOUTH, Ore.—A day after weathering an hour-plus rain delay, the Western Oregon University softball team managed to squeeze a single game in before another deluge with Central Washington defeating the Wolves 7-1 in GNAC softball action.
Western Oregon (13-11, 3-4 GNAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning of the second game before the contest was called off due to heavy showers. The date for resumption of the contest has yet to be determined.
Western Oregon will resume play with six games at the Tournament of Champions held in Stanislaus, California March 23-25.
Both teams turned double plays in the opening innings to thwart would-be attacks, but Central Washington (13-4, 7-0 GNAC) sent all nine batters to the plate in the third to score five runs. Alycia Bannan provided the biggest hit of the frame with a 3-run 2-out double to left.
The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the 4th inning for a 7-0 lead. Stranding six runners on base, the Wolves avoided the shutout with a sacrifice fly by Zoe Clark in the home half of the fourth.
Cheyanne Rimer led WOU offensively with a 2-for-3 game that included the solo run scored.
Lexie Strasser (6-3) picked up the win for CWU after allowing six runs over the seven innings.
