TURLOCK, Calif.—Held to three hits, Western Oregon University fell to CSU Monterey Bay, 9-1, in softball action at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday evening.
Western Oregon (14-13) was originally scheduled to play in two games on Saturday but many of the early contests were cancelled due to rain in the area. The Wolves did not take the field until past 8 p.m. The team is scheduled to play a pair of games in the third and final day of the tournament on Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup against San Francisco State and a 2 p.m. contest against Chico State.
After splitting its Friday slate, WOU found itself trailing almost immediately as CSUMB strung together single runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings. The Otters added a pair of runs in the 4rd before a 5-run 5th ended the game via the collegiate mercy rule.
The Otters scored their nine runs on 10 hits while pitcher Hayley Fein held WOU's offense in check. WOU's lone score occurred in the top of the 2rd when Sydney Bowers, who reached base on a one-out triple, scored on a CSUMB fielding error at first on an Ayanna Arceneaux's at bat.
The Otters turned to pitcher Rosaline Keirns in the 4th inning where Keirns pitched two scoreless frames to close out the game. Fein picked up the win after striking out four and allowing the one unearned run on one hit.
