Grubbe gem leads Wolves to another series win

PORTLAND, Ore.—Closing out the series with a 1-hit performance by starter Craig Grubbe, Western Oregon posted a Sunday split with a 4-3 loss and a 2-0 win over Concordia University in a GNAC baseball doubleheader at Porter Park.

With the split, Western Oregon (12-11, 12-4 GNAC) secured its second straight GNAC series win as the team swept the Cavaliers with a pair of shut outs on Saturday. The Wolves will host Northwest Nazarene University (8-18, 6-10 GNAC) March 30-31 for a four-game set at the WOU Baseball Field.

Nearing the completion of the first half of the conference schedule, Western Oregon holds a one-game lead over Central Washington (11-5) and Montana State Billings (11-5) for the top spot in the GNAC standings.

Game 2: Western Oregon def. Concordia, 2-0
Allowing just one hit over the seven-inning complete game, Craig Grubbe led Western Oregon to a 2-0 win in the second game of a conference twin bill on Sunday.

Grubbe struck out seven and walked two in the outing. Concordia managed only two runners past first base against Grubbe with both instances being aided by a WOU fielding error. CU's lone hit occurred in the second inning with Eddie Vasquez connecting on a single to right.

Backing up the stellar pitching performance, WOU registered a single run in the 3rd inning with Griffey Halle singling through the right side to plate Connor McCord. The Wolves added an insurance run in the 7th with Jay Leverett directing a sacrifice bunt to allow Cody Dykstra to scamper home.

Game 1: Concordia def. Western Oregon, 4-3
Down 3-1 in the late innings, Concordia placed a 3-spot on the board in the home half of the 8th to stun Western Oregon, 4-3, in the opening game on Sunday.

The Wolves received yet another strong start by Jacob Fricke with Fricke allowing just one run on eight hits over six stanzas.

Connor McCord doubled in the 1st inning to plate teammate Jacob Martinez while Nyles Nygaard led off the 4th with a solo homer to left field to make it a 2-0 lead for the Wolves.

Concordia loaded the bases in the 4th but Fricke got out of the jam with just one run scored as one of his three strikeouts ended the inning.

After the Cavaliers took their first lead of the series with the trio of runs in the 8th Dylan Diaz sent the Wolves down in order in the top of the 9th to collect the save.

Martinez and Leverett both went 2-for-4 for the Wolves while CU outhit their visitors 10-to-7 overall.
