Warriors slay Wolves in non-conference tilt

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Picking up a non-conference game against NAIA power Lewis-Clark State College, the Western Oregon University baseball team fell, 11-2, while playing at home on Wednesday.

With the setback, Western Oregon fell to 19-16 on the season. Lewis-Clark State, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA national poll, improved to 34-9 on the year.

Western Oregon will remain in Monmouth this week with a four-game series against Central Washington on April 28-29. Opening pitch for both days of the GNAC doubleheaders is set for 12 p.m. The team will honor its 10-member senior class in pregame festivities on Sunday against the Wildcats.

Though the two teams played four scoreless innings, the Warriors never trailed in the game. LCSC struck for two runs in the 5th inning and continued to add to its total with at least one run in all four of the remaining frames.

Down 3-0 heading to the bottom of the 6th, Western Oregon pulled to within a single run as Hunter Johnson connected on a two-out double to left to plate teammates Nyles Nygaard and Justin Wakem.

The Wolves nearly broke through two innings earlier as the team loaded the bases via a hit by pitch drawn by Johnson following back-to-back singles from Jared McDonald and Wakem. LCSC starter Anthony Toribio managed to escape the 4th inning unscathed by inducing a fly out to right. The Warriors turned to their bullpen in the 5th where Brady Tedesco picked up the win with 1 1/3 innings of work.

The Wolves used six pitchers in the game with starter Grant Fisher and Dylan Myers allowing four hits, but no runs in the first four innings.

Wakem led WOU at the plate with a 2-for-3 line with a run scored.

LCSC outhit Western Oregon 14 to 7.
