NAMPA, Idaho—Giving up seven runs on both sides of the doubleheader, Western Oregon dropped a pair of GNAC softball contests while closing out the weekend series at Northwest Nazarene on Friday.
Northwest Nazarene (19-18, 10-6 GNAC) defeated the Wolves, 7-0, in the opener before completing a comeback with a 7-6 walk-off win in the 9th inning in the nightcap. With the results, NNU moved into sole possession of second place in the GNAC standings while Western Oregon (20-18, 8-8 GNAC) dropped to fourth in the league race.
The Wolves will stay in Oregon next week with a four-game series against Concordia. The teams will play two games on Saturday in Monmouth before closing out the weekend with a doubleheader in Portland on Sunday. Opening pitch is set for 12 p.m. on both days.
Game 2: Northwest Nazarene def. Western Oregon, 7-6 (9 inn.)
Leading off the bottom of the 9th, Brittany Genuardi delivered a home run to right in a 7-6 walk-off win for NNU in the second game of the GNAC doubleheader on Friday.
The Nighthawks trailed 5-1 after two innings and rallied with three runs in the 4th and two more in the home half of the 6th to knot the game at 6-6.
Nicole Miller got the Wolves got off to a good start with an RBI single in the 1st while the Wolves piled on to their lead in the next inning with four additional runs. After a Tyler Creach RBI single, the Wolves loaded the bases for Cheyanne Rimer, who earned an RBI by drawing a walk. Creach scored from a wild pitch and Jenna Kelly provided the final run with a sac fly to left to plate Ryanne Huffman.
Creach ended the game going 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Huffman and Miller both had two-hit games.
Game 1: Northwest Nazarene def. Western Oregon, 7-0
After three scoreless innings, NNU broke through with a single run in the 4th before plating three runs in each of the final two frames for a 7-0 win in Friday's opener.
The Nighthawks outhit the Wolves 11 to 5 and used three extra-base swings led to RBI late in the game. Anna Williams homered in the 5th and was followed by a 2-run double by Lisa Sylvester. Brittany Genuari broke the game open in the 6th with a bases-loaded triple to center to make it a 7-run spread.
Jordan Adams (11-5) tossed a complete game in the circle to pick up the win for the Nighthawks.
