Cavs win 9-8 after WOU rally

MONMOUTH, Ore.—Facing a Concordia team fighting for their playoff lives, Western Oregon fell, 9-8, to the Cavaliers at home on Tuesday.

Despite the result, Western Oregon (22-18, 22-14 GNAC) can still clinch the No. 2 seed in the GNAC Tournament with one win or one Central Washington loss this week. The Wolves will play four games at Northwest Nazarene on May 3-4 to close out the regular season.

Concordia (17-29, 16-20 GNAC), meanwhile, will be rooting for the Wolves as the Cavaliers hold a one-game lead over NNU for the fourth and final GNAC Tournament spot.

Concordia jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the 1st inning only to see WOU retaliate with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd.

After eventually giving up the lead in the 4th, the Cavaliers scored three unanswered runs for a 7-4 lead heading to the bottom of the 6th.

With just six outs to play with, Western Oregon stormed back with four runs on three hits in the frame to secure its first lead of the day. Jacob Martinez started the spree with a one-out single while a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for Jared McDonald. A wild pitch allowed Martinez to score before McDonald laced a double to left-center field to plate Justin Wakem. Nyles Nygaard and Griffey Halle closed out the attack with a sacrifice fly and a single to center.

Concordia, however, responded with two runs on three hits to regain the lead in the 7th and final scheduled inning. CU reliever Dylan Diaz allowed a one-out walk in the bottom of the 7th but escaped with the save after inducing a double play grounder to second for the final outs.

CU outhit the Wolves 12 to 8 with Eddie Vasquez leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance that included three RBI. Martinez, McDonald and Halle all posted two-hit games for WOU.
