MONMOUTH, Ore.—Behind a pair of complete games in the circle and a historic day at the plate by sophomore
Tyler Creach, the Western Oregon University softball team swept Simon Fraser, 6-3 and 9-3, to open GNAC play on Saturday.
Western Oregon's (9-3) received quality starts by
Haley Fabian and
Maddie Mayer while Creach registered seven RBI as part of a 2-home run game in the nightcap to outscore Simon Fraser (5-3) 15-6.
The Wolves will return to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday when they host Western Washington University.
Game 1: Western Oregon def. Simon Fraser, 6-3
Simon Fraser outhit the Wolves 4-3 through three frames but the Wolves manufactured a 2-1 lead through an RBI triple by
Kennedy Coy and a sacrifice fly from
Ayanna Arceneaux.
The Clan regained the lead in the top of the 5th with three straight hits to start the stanza. Alex Ogg imitated the attack with a single to left and was followed up by a double to center from Bonnie Whitford.
WOU retaliated in the home half of the 5th by batting 10 in the inning. Arceneaux provided the key swing in the barrage with a 2-run double to plate
Cheyanne Rimer and Coy.
Now holding a three-run lead,
Haley Fabian closed out the contest with two clean innings, including a 1-2-3 6th. Fabian struck out two and walked three with only two earned runs in the complete game.
Game 2: Western Oregon def. Simon Fraser, 9-3
In a preview of things to come, leadoff hitter
Tyler Creach connected on a solo homer to open the account in the 1st before a monster day at the plate during WOU's 9-3 win in the second game against Simon Fraser.
Returning to the plate in the 2nd, but this time with the bases loaded, Creach launched another ball over the fence to give the Wolves a commanding 6-0 lead.
Simon Fraser pulled three runs back in the top of the 3rd only to see Creach once again step up to the plate with runners on all three bags. Keeping the ball inside the park, Creach belted a pitch through the right side to score two on the play and give the sophomore a career-high seven RBI.
Moving to the 4th, the Wolves once again loaded the bases for Creach where an infield popup left the outfielder one RBI shy of the school and GNAC record.
Accomplished during the 2009 season, WOU's
Jessica Hallmark was the last GNAC player to notch eight RBI in a game. Seattle University's Jane Purdy also reached the mark during the 2006 season.
The Wolves outhit SFU 13-11 in the game with five different players recording multi-hit games. Setting up the top of the order, No. 9 hitter
Ayanna Arceneaux went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Ryanne Whitaker,
Cheyanne Rimer and
Sydney Bowers also notched two hits in the game.
Freshman
Maddie Mayer improved to 3-1 on the season with the complete game in the circle. Mayer struck out two and walked one over 7.0 innings of work.
