Mayer continues shutout streak in WOU split at CU

PORTLAND, Ore.—Entering the day tied for third place in the GNAC standings, Western Oregon and Concordia will enter Sunday's series finale in the same position after a Saturday split at Porter Park.

Concordia (21-18, 11-7 GNAC) used a walk-off sacrifice fly to win the opener 4-3 while Western Oregon (21-18, 11-7 GNAC) received another shutout from freshman Maddie Mayer in a 5-0 win in the nightcap.

The two teams will resume the series on Sunday with a doubleheader in Monmouth, Oregon. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at the WOU Softball Field

Game 2: Western Oregon def. Concordia, 5-0
In a tight battle until the final frame, Western Oregon provided Maddie Mayer (8-2) with four late runs for a 5-0 cushion before the freshman closed out the contest with her third straight shutout.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Wolves placed a four on the board in their final turn at the plate. Loading the bases without giving up an out, the Wolves broke the game open on a Kennedy Coy 3-run triple to left for a 4-0 advantage.

Ryanne Whitaker followed with an RBI groundout for the final run as the Wolves scored the four runs on two walks, one hit batter, and just the one hit by Coy.

Ayanne Arceneaux drove in the game's opening run with a 2-out single to plate Baylie Kahele, in the top of the 2nd.

Allowing four hits and one walk, Mayer faced just four batters over the minimum for her third straight shutout and fourth straight win. Over her last three starts, Mayer has struck out 13 batters and walked two while dropping her earned-run average to 2.42.

Game 1: Concordia def. Western Oregon, 4-3
Scoring the final four runs of the game, Concordia overcame an early deficit to defeat Western Oregon, 4-3, in the opener.

The last of three straight 2-out hits, Mariah Deleon provided all of the Wolves' offense with a 3-run homer in the top of the 3rd. Tyler Creach initiated the attack with a single to right while Jenna Kelly followed with a single to left to place two runners on for Deleon.

Connected with a 1-2 count, Deleon drove the ball over the left-field fence for her third homer of the year.

Using a 3-run homer of their own, the Cavaliers evened the game with a blast by Maria Stockton in the bottom of the 5th.

The Wolves placed runners on base in each of the next two innings but could not produce the go-ahead run as CU starter Sally Bowles (8-7) kept the WOU offense in check.

With just one out, the Cavs placed runners at the corner in the bottom of the 7th before an intentional walk loaded the bases for Hannah Self, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right for the walk-off win.

The Wolves out out the Cavs 12 to 6 but were bit by eight stranded base runners.
