Women's basketball visiting SFU, WWU this week

BURNABY, B.C./BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Western Oregon women's basketball team heads north this week, visiting the Simon Fraser Clan and Western Washington Vikings to flip the calendar to February as they continue Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Western Oregon (5-12, 2-8 GNAC) ran their losing streak to four consecutive games last week with a pair of home losses to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks and the Central Washington Wildcats. Thursday's contest against NNU had the makings for a big upset as the Wolves led for a majority of the game, including outscoring the Nighthawks in each of the first three quarters. It wasn't to be, however, as NNU out-scored the Wolves 23-3 in the final period to come back for the 10-point win.

Senior Shariah Green led WOU in scoring over the week with 24 combined points in the two games, scoring 12 in each. She added on 12 rebounds to contributions in 51 total minutes of play.

Green and Keyonna Jones both sit at a 10.8 points per game average to lead the team offensively, remaining the only two players for Western to average in double figures for the season.

As a team, the Wolves are putting up 57.0 points per game while allowing 63.2 to opponents. They are shooting 36.3 percent from the field and 24.7 percent from 3-point range.

Simon Fraser (12-8, 7-3 GNAC) finds themselves in a battle at the top of the GNAC, currently sitting in a tie for third and only two games out of first place. The Clan just had a two-game winning streak snapped with an 87-66 loss at home to the conference-leading Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. Before the loss, SFU was on a tear with wins in six of their last seven games.

Western and Simon Fraser's first meeting of the year came on Jan. 4 in Monmouth where the Clan rallied late for a 64-57 win. It was another game that the Wolves controlled for most of the first three quarters before stumbling in the final minutes. SFU needed a 27-12 advantage in the fourth to come back for the seven-point win. WOU's Amber Winkler recorded her first collegiate double-double in the game, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds in the start.

WOU is 5-14 against Simon Fraser all-time. The Clan have won the last two in the series and seven of the last eight meetings dating back to 2016. Western's last win in Burnaby was on Jan. 10, 2019, and was their first on the road in the series since 2011. WOU is 2-7 on the road in the series.

Western Washington (13-5, 7-3 GNAC) holds the longest active winning streak in the conference, rattling off three straight wins to jump into a tie for third in the GNAC standings. That run includes win in six of the last seven contests dating back to Jan. 4. The lone slip during that period has been a 72-62 loss at Central Washington.

The Vikings are led by the 13.8 points per game of senior Anna Schwecke who also pulls in 6.7 rebounds per game.

In their first meeting of the season, Western Oregon was able to pull out a thrilling 73-70 double overtime win over WWU, led by the 22 points of Tresai McCarver who also tallied seven rebounds and six assists. As a team, WOU put together nine blocks and nine steals to force 23 turnovers in the victory.

WOU is 5-34 all-time against WWU. Despite the lopsided record, the Wolves have taken two of the last five meetings, both coming in Monmouth. They are 1-18 in Bellingham in the series.

Western Oregon's matchup Thursday, Jan. 30, against Simon Fraser and Saturday, Feb. 1, against Western Washington are both set for 7 p.m. PST tipoffs. Live stats and video will be available here.
