Carlos’ grand slam and a complete game effort from Mayer sends softball to opening day split at Desert Stinger

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The bats came alive in the second game and one big hit was all Maddie Mayer needed in the circle. Logan Carlos cracked her first collegiate home run and it was a big one, a grand slam to send the Western Oregon University softball team to a 5-1 win over Sonoma State. San Francisco State defeated the Wolves in the first game of the day, 11-1, in six innings during day one of the Desert Stinger.

"It was nice to be able to bounce back from the first game and come out and score right away against a good team in Sonoma State in the second game. I'm really proud of our kids and I think we were more aggressive at the plate in the second game, along with being more confident with what we've been working on," head coach Lonny Sargent said. "Being the first time facing someone else pitching other than our own team, we were a little hesitant in the first game. Going into the rest of the tournament, will be looking for us to keep growing and being more confident while allowing our team to get to know each other with a younger group and some that didn't play in the fall."

Carlos certainly picked a good time for her first collegiate long ball as the sophomore second baseman, batting ninth, hit the big fly in the third for a grand slam and 4-0 lead. It was a big hit for the Wolves (1-1) as the inning prior they had the bases loaded, but weren't able to score. In the third, junior Sydney Bowers singled in front of a single by junior Kiley Lynn and on her single to left, redshirt freshman Zoie Recolan attempted to score after reaching on an error to open the frame, but was cut down at home. Sophomore Baylie Kahele then walked with two outs to load the bases for Carlos who delivered the big hit of the game with the grand slam.

"Once the ball left my bat I knew it was going to leave the yard," Carlos said. "I was kind of in shock at first, but then I saw everyone running around and then I knew I did it."

That was more than enough offense for sophomore Mayer in the circle as the left-hander spun a complete game, seven inning affair giving up just the one earned run and added six strikeouts.

"It felt really good to get back out there as I was out for the fall, so the Sonoma State game was my first one of the season and it was super fun to be back out there again," Mayer said. "I think today was just the first game jitters, I think we will be able to relax a little bit for day two."

For good measure in the fifth, WOU added the final run of the game when junior Tyler Creach singled to right field to plate freshman pinch-runner Kirah McGlothan for the 5-1 lead. McGlothan came on to run for Kahele who opened the frame with a one out single to third base. Mayer then allowed just a walk over the final two innings to get the victory.

WOU outhit Sonoma State (0-1), 11-3, while the SeaWolves committed the only two errors in the game. Senior Kennedy Coy, Creach, redshirt junior Ayanna Arceneaux and Carlos all had two hit games to lead the offense. As it turned out, seven of the nine in the lineup had at least a hit.

Megan Ambriz led Sonoma State with the only two-hit game and she had the only extra base hit, a double, in the lineup. Nalani Scates started in the circle and allowed four earned runs in three innings to take the loss. Teresa Danenberg went the final three innings and allowed just one earned run.

Earlier in the day, WOU opened the 2020 season against a familiar regional opponent in San Francisco State (1-1). The Gators were able to ride a big five-run second inning and four-run six inning to take the 11-1 win in six innings.

The Wolves opened the scoring in the first inning of the year. With two quick outs, Arceneaux singled and after Recolan walked, Arceneaux stole third just in time for senior Chandler Bishop to single her home for the early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, San Francisco State scored all five runs with two outs in the frame for the 5-1 lead. Recolan picked up her first collegiate hit with a single to left field in the third. WOU then threatened in the fourth when redshirt senior Nicole Miller, back in action for the first time since the 2018 season, drew a walk. Carlos and Coy followed with walks to load the bases before a strikeout ended the inning.

After the Gators added two runs in the home half of the fourth, WOU threatened one more time in the fifth. Recolan doubled and after Bowers singled to put runners at the corners, a pop out ended the inning. San Francisco State then ended the game early with four runs in the sixth.

San Francisco State held a 13-6 edge in hits, with four players recording at least two hits and Lehua DeLeon drove in a game-high four RBI. Emily Mitchell picked up the win in the circle after working the first four innings allowing just one earned run. Natalie Minteer went the final two innings and didn't allow a run.

Recolan led WOU with two hits, as five Wolves had at least a hit. Sophomore Reilly Tidwell went all 5.2 innings and allowed nine earned runs.

WOU continues the Desert Stinger on Saturday facing Colorado Christian at 4:30 p.m. and then Oklahoma Christian at 7 p.m.
