Soccer Plays Close Game in Season Opener Versus Carroll College

VANCOUVER, Wash. – The Western Oregon University soccer team returned to the field for the first time since November 14, 2019 when they faced Carroll College in a neutral site contest on Sunday. Despite holding the advantage in shots and shots on goal, the Wolves fell just short to the Saints, 2-0.

WOU recorded 14 total shots with eight landing on goal. Newcomer Chloe Smith led the way with six shots and four ending up on target. Melinda Ortega fired three shots with two landing on goal. Piper Matson added a pair of shots with one on goal. Shauna Johnston had the other shot on goal for the Wolves.

Kendall Rooney made the start in goal for the Wolves and played the first half, while Cassidy Flammang started the second half and played the rest of the game. Flammang recorded three saves, while Rooney ended up with two.

Carroll College ended up with nine shots and seven on goal, coming away with both goals in the game during the second half. Morgan Ferestad and Kaitlynn Anderson each tallied a goal to lead the Saints. Sydney Green started in goal and played the entire game coming away with eight saves for the shutout.

WOU will now prepare for their home opener on March 18 when they host Saint Martin's beginning at 2 p.m. at the WOU Soccer Field.
