Soccer Closes Spring Season Falling to Vikings Despite Eight Saves From Wheeler

VANCOUVER, Wash. – Emily Wheeler did all she could in goal for the Western Oregon University soccer team on Wednesday against Western Washington. In total, the Vikings had 11 shots on goal and Wheeler was able to make eight saves, but the Vikings took the 3-0 victory at the Harmony Sports Complex in Vancouver, Wash.

WOU (1-7) was able to generate eight shots in the game with four on goal. WWU (2-0-2) tallied 18 shots, including 11 in the first half. WWU held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks and of the 12 fouls that were whistled, 11 were called on the Wolves.

Similar to the start of the game against Northwest Nazarene, it was tough for either team to score throughout the first half.

Before WOU was able to get a shot, Wheeler came up with two big saves to keep the game scoreless. In the 17th minute, Hannah Rispler launched the first shot on goal for the Wolves that was saved.

Into the 30th minute, Piper Matson fired a shot that was saved and a minute later, Alyssa Tomasini added a shot that was also saved. In the 34th minute, Payton Neal picked up the first goal of the game for the Vikings.

Wheeler kept it a 1-0 game into the half coming away with two more saves in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Gabby Pulliam generated a shot just over four minutes in that just missed the net. WWU pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal by Zola Carbone in the 55th minute.

Following another shot by Pulliam, this time on goal that was saved in the 63rd minute, the Vikings closed the scoring in the 65th minute on a goal by Drew Baty.

Wheeler would make three more saves down the stretch to keep the final score at 3-0 for WWU.

Matson, Rispler and Pulliam led the Wolves with two shots apiece. All three also had a shot on goal, while Tomasini's only shot landed on goal in her final game for the Wolves.

Neal led WWU with three shots, all on goal. Carbone added three shots as well, with two landing on target. Dayana Diaz had a pair of shots that both went on goal.

Wheeler started and played all 90 minutes for the Wolves in making the eight saves.

Claire Henninger started for the Vikings and played the first 60-plus minutes to get the win after making three saves. Gracie Wales went the final 29-plus minutes and tallied one save.

With the game against WWU now complete, WOU wraps up the 2021 spring season in which they played 10 total games.
