MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 campaign noon Saturday against Cal Poly Humboldt at the SMU Classic in Lacey, Washington. The Wolves close out action at the event noon Sunday against Capilano.

WESTERN OREGON HEADING INTO THE SEASON | 2021-22 STATISTICS
The Wolves are coming off a 9-17 season in 2021-22, including a 5-13 record in GNAC play to take eighth in the standings. WOU was picked to finish ninth in the GNAC Preseason Poll this season.

The Wolves return a pair of starters in junior Cali McClave, who averaged 9.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and a team-best 1.8 steals per game, and sophomore Madisyn Clark, who averaged 6.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. Other key returners from last season include senior Princy Paaluhi-Caulk (5.5 ppg, 1.5 apg), sophomore Ana McClave (4.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.1 spg) and sophomore Caitlin Wheeler (3.4 ppg, 2.8 rpg).


Look for freshmen Kiylynn Dawkins - who led the team with 19 points in an 82-66 exhibition loss at Oregon State on Oct. 30 -  Kylee Arzner and Erika Glenn to make an impact as well as Lower Columbia Community College transfer Ally Harman.

REST OF THE FIELD AT THE SMU CLASSIC ...
The Wolves' Saturday opponent Cal Poly Humboldt went 7-16 a season ago while Sunday's opponent Capilano - a team in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association - went 12-4 a year ago. As for St. Martin's, who the Wolves don't play until Dec. 31 to open GNAC play, went 13-14 last season - including 4-12 in GNAC play.
 
WESTERN OREGON NOTES
WOLVES PICKED NINTH IN GNAC PRESEASON POLL
The Western Oregon women's basketball team was selected to finish ninth in the GNAC Preseason Poll when it was released Oct. 21. The Wolves finished with 22 points, finishing ahead of Alaska (15) and behind Saint Martin's (27). Western Washington was picked first with 98 points and eight first points followed by Alaska Anchorage (84 points, one first-place vote) and Montana State Billings (81 points, one first-place vote). WOU went 9-17 overall and 5-13 in the GNAC last season - finishing eighth in the conference.
