WOU women's hoops opens season with 75-69 win over Cal Poly Humboldt

LACEY, Washington --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to come away with a season-opening 75-69 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt at the SMU Classic.

The Wolves (1-0) trailed 63-59 with 6:16 left before a Kylee Arzner 3-pointer ignited a 12-1 run over the a three-plus minute span that was capped by a pair of Princy Paaluhi-Caulk free throws with 3:27 remaining to give WOU a 71-64 lead.

CPH cut the lead to three with just under a minute left at 72-69, but the Wolves closed the game out with free throws to come away with the win.

"This was a great team win to start the season," WOU coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "I thought we showed a lot of grit down the stretch coming back and holding the lead. Everyone contributed and I'm especially proud of how our bench stepped up. Kylee came in and gave us some great offense, Gracie had some big buckets when we went on our run and Ally had some key stops in the fourth."

Arzner led the Wolves in scoring, coming off the bench to score 18 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Paaluhi-Caulk finished with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five assists. Cali McClave had 15 points, three rebounds and two steals. 

The Wolves shot 45 percent from the field and overcame shooting just 3-for-17 from 3-point range. WOU dominated the glass, outrebounding CPH 43-27 - including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds and snagging 10 second-chance points. The Wolves also held CPH to just three offensive rebounds and no second-chance points.

WOU is back in action noon Sunday against Capilano.
