BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Oregon University softball team traveled up north to Bellingham to face Western Washington in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday. The Vikings rallied to take game one, 5-3, and then won the nightcap in five innings, 8-0.
In the first game, WOU (12-7) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first few innings. Logan Carlos continued her hot streak at the plate leading off the game with a solo homer to left-center on a full-count pitch. In the second inning, Carlos was back for more. With Kate Ronning and Sophie Franklin each working walks to begin the frame, a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Following a strikeout for the second out, Carlos ripped a single through the left side to bring in both runners for the 3-0 lead.
Reilly Tidwell worked around a few jams to keep Western Washington (7-11) scoreless through the first 3.1 innings. Chelsea Smith recorded the final two outs of the fourth. In the fifth, the Vikings were able to break through. A solo homer and later a two-run single with two outs helped WWU tie the game at three.
WWU went ahead for good in the sixth. With two outs, the Vikings were able to draw a walk and three straight singles to score two runs for the 5-3 lead. The Wolves put a runner on in the seventh with a single by Maddie Doig, but weren't able to mount a rally with WWU holding on for the 5-3 victory.
WWU held an 11-5 edge in hits and WOU committed the only error in the game.
Carlos led the way with two hits and three RBI. Tidwell pitched the first 3.1 innings to end up with the no decision, allowing no runs with three strikeouts. Smith suffered her first loss (7-1) of the season, allowing five earned runs and tallied three strikeouts.
Kanilehua Pitoy paced the Vikings with three hits, while Lauren Lo added two hits. Rachel Christensen tallied two RBI. Joie Baker started for WWU and went the first 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs. Kira Doan tallied the win (3-3) going the final 5.1 innings and allowed no runs.
In the second game, WOU threatened right away with Doig picking up a single and Natalie Willoughby walking, but a fielder's choice groundout ended the inning.
WWU then opened up a big early lead scoring six runs on five hits in the home half of the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
WOU had two baserunners on in the fourth when Ronning and Franklin both walked, but a strikeout ended the inning. WWU pushed across the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.
WWU held a 9-1 edge in hits and WOU committed the only error.
Doig tallied the only hit, while Willoughby, Ronning and Franklin all drew walks. Jada Young started for the Wolves and ended up with the loss (0-1) allowing four earned runs. Nicki Derrick went the final four innings, allowing four runs (three earned), along with four strikeouts.
Dakota Brooks and Rylie Wales led the Vikings with two hits, while Chantelle Shimabukuro drove in three runs. Sydney Brown went all five innings in the circle to get the shutout win (1-1).
WOU keeps the road trip going as they will travel to Lacey to face Saint Martin's tomorrow (Saturday) for another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
