MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team was going to make history anyway playing the first game in program history Friday afternoon against Hawaii Pacific at WOU Soccer Field.
But the Wolves proved they aren't just happy to be here - they are out for wins.
WOU broke a scoreless tie with an
Alex Grignon goal in the 74th minute and held on to defeat the Sharks 1-0 - earning the program its first win in its first game.
The Wolves (1-0) and HPU (0-1), a team that had eight wins a season ago - including going 6-2-2 in the Pacific West Conference - played a scoreless first half with neither team getting a great look with the Sharks outshooting WOU 6-4 (though the Wolves had two shots on goal compared to none for HPU).
Things opened up for Western Oregon in the second half and the Wolves broke through in the 74th minute when Grignon went one-on-one and from the left side put a ball in the bottom-right corner to score the first goal in program history and give WOU a 1-0 advantage.
It was enough as the Wolves held off the Sharks to pick up the victory.
WOU outshot HPU 10-8 in the game, including 5-1 on shots on goal.
Juan Suarez picked up the shutout for the Wolves - making one save.
Abraham Villalobos led Western Oregon with four shots - one on goal as the freshman used his speed and agility to get some good looks.
The Wolves return to action with an exhibition contest noon Sunday at Lewis & Clark in Portland.
