PORTLAND, Oregon --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team was named the GNAC Team of the Week on Monday after the Wolves won their first match in program history.
The Wolves defeated Hawaii Pacific, 1-0, at WOU Soccer Field on Friday - a Sharks squad that had eight wins under its belt a season ago and return much of its starting lineup.
The contest was scoreless until the 74th minute when freshman
Alex Grignon went one-on-one on the left side and put a ball into the bottom-right corner to score the first goal and first game-winner in WOU men's soccer history.
Juan Suarez picked up the shutout thanks to a strong defensive effort by the Wolves allowing just one shot on goal.
"My staff and team are honored to be given this recognition," WOU men's soccer coach
Stan Rodrigues said. "This has been a longtime coming and putting the first ever team together has had many great moments. We know the GNAC is extremely competitive and we are proud to be a part of it."
Western Oregon returns to action Thursday at Westminster in Utah.
