MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The 19th-ranked Western Oregon women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Western Washington 3-2 Saturday afternoon at WOU Soccer Field.
The Wolves (4-1-1 overall, 1-1 GNAC) fell behind the Vikings (3-1-2, 2-0) in the 40th minute on a Payton Neal goal (a loose ball in front of the net that was booted in).
Early in the second half, WWU took a 2-0 lead when Ashley Nguyen converted a penalty kick on a foul called on WOU in the box.
The Wolves answered, however as
Briana Kubli scored on a pass from
Elizabeth Parker to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute.
The Vikings increased their lead to 3-1 when Claire Potter scored from just outside the top of the box into the top-right corner. Again, WOU answered with a Kubli goal - this one assisted by a long
Hannah Rispler throw in in the 80th minute.
But the Wolves couldn't find the equalizer in the final 10 minutes.
WWU outshot WOU 13-8 in the contest, including 5-4 on shots on goal. Kubli led WOU with five shots while
Lilly Nowatzke had two (one on goal).
Olivia Holdenried finished with two saves at keeper for the Wolves.
WOU returns to action Thursday on the road at Seattle Pacific.
