SEATTLE --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team capped a breakout second season as a program with a 2-1 win at Seattle Pacific on Saturday night.
Despite the win, the Wolves will fall tantalizingly short of a GNAC title and an NCAA automatic berth. With games in the conference canceled this season due to inclement weather, the standings came down to points per match. WOU finished at 2.25 points per match with its 8-1-3 conference record, .02 points behind Simon Fraser's 2.27 with a 8-2-1 record. WOU sits 13th in the Super Region 4 rankings entering the week. The NCAA Division II Men's Selection Committee takes 10 teams from each of the four Super Regions with the selections coming Monday.
As for Saturday's victory, the Wolves (11-3-3 overall, 8-1-3 GNAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Falcons (5-9-4, 3-6-3) thanks to
Aidan Brouddus' first goal of the season in the 15th minute assisted by
Jacob Garcia and
Yahir Ocampo scoring in the 29th minute. SPU cut the lead to 2-1 when Reymundo Mendez scored his 12th goal of the year, but the Wolves held on for the victory.
WOU was outshot 16-8, but just 5-4 on shots on goal.
Juan Suarez picked up three saves at keeper for the Wolves.
