MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team strong pitching and defense to come away with a pair of wins, 8-1 and 2-0, over Bushnell on Wednesday at WOU Softball Field.
The Wolves gave up just one earned run on nine hits with 15 strikeouts in 14 innings of work while the defense didn't commit an error on the day.
In the first game, The Wolves scored two in the first - capped by an RBI groundout by by
Katelyn McGough - before scoring four more in the third capped by a two-run single from
Sydney Conklin to make it 6-0. The Beacons scored a run in the fifth before WOU scored two in the sixth - highlighted by a
Kirah McGlothan RBI double to left to make the final 8-1.
Maddie Mayer got the win in the circle, going six innings and giving up a run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
Erica Soliz pitched a scoreless seventh for the Wolves.
At the plate, McGlothan finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run while
Maddie Doig was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.
It also marked the first career victory for head coach and WOU alum
Aly Boytz.
In the second game,
Chelsea Smith was strong in the circle - going five shutout innings while giving up three hits and striking nine without walking a batter. NIcki Derrick came in and picked up the save, going the final two innings and giving up just one hit.
The Wolves got all their offense on one swing of the bat in the fourth inning from
Sophie Franklin as she blasted a two-run homer to left center to break the scoreless affair.
WOU had its chances, but left 14 runners on base in the contest.
Bella Valdes went 2-for-3 with a double and stolen base, Doig was 2-for-3 with a double and
Chelby Smalley went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
The Wolves return to action Friday as they travel to take part in the Concordia Irvine Tournament.
