Western Oregon men's basketball picks up big OT win at Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team moved a step closer to a GNAC Championship berth with a 74-69 overtime win over Alaska Anchorage on Saturday at Alaska Airlines Center.

The Wolves sit at 8-8 in GNAC play, in fifth place in the standings with two games to go and the top six teams making the postseason conference tournament. WOU is a game ahead of No. 6 Central Washington and a game and a half ahead of Western Washington - meaning one more win in WOU's next two games and the Wolves will clinch a spot into the GNAC Championships.

As for Saturday's contest, the Wolves led in regulation 63-61 with under a minute left before the Seawolves scored with 50 seconds left to tie it. Each team had a chance to win, but neither team scored as the game went to overtime.

The Wolves scored the first six points of overtime - capped by a Cameron Benzel bucket with 3:20 left as UAA didn't score until there was 1:44 remaining in overtime. But the Seawolves got within one with 1:01 left before a key bucket by John Morrill-Keeler with 36 seconds made it a three-point game. Cameron Cranston then hit a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to seal the game.

Cranston led the team with 26 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Benzel had 16 points, five rebound and three blocks while Morrill-Keeler had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a team-high five assists.

WOU takes on Northwest Nazarene at home Thursday.
