NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Western Oregon used a pair of home runs and seven pitchers combining to give up just four hits as the Wolves defeated George Fox 5-4 Tuesday at Morse Athletic Field.
WOU (11-7) hit both home runs in the third inning - a solo shot from
Levi Cummings he pulled out to left and a two-run shot by
Curran Mitzel he went opposite field with to left to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead.Â
Wou added a run in the fourth on a
John Oleson RBI single to make it 4-0 before GFU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. WOU added a run in the sixth on an
Owen Bischoff single and an errors that scored
Justyn Herzog to push the lead to 5-2. GFU scored a run in the sixth and seventh to cut the Wolf lead to one, but Mitzel tossed a perfect eighth inning and
Judah Graham gave up just a hit in the ninth to pick up the save and secure the WOU win.
Derek Maiben paced the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run to increase his average to a GNAC-best .431 as the senior shortstop has a hit in 21 of his last 22 games. Cummings also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with the homer.
Chris Jones was given the win, going two innings and not giving up a hit or run with three strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.
WOU returns to action Friday as it begins a four-game series on the road with Montana State Billings.
