MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team won a pair of one-run games, 4-3 and 8-7, against Central Washington - the last in dramatic fashion on Friday to open a four-games series at WOU Softball Field.
In game one, the Wolves (20-18 overall, 9-3Â GNAC) took a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning on the Wildcats (16-18, 4-6)Â thanks to a
Baylie Kahele RBI double to left to score
Sophie Franklin and a Sydney Franklin fielder's choice to score
Bella Valdes.
Â
CWU scored an unearned run without the benefit of hit in the fourth before WOU answered with two more runs on a Valdes bunt single that scored Franklin and a double steal with Conkling swiping home to make it 4-1.
Â
The score remained that way until the seventh as WOU pitcher
Maddie Mayer had a no-hitter going until it was broken up with a single to start the inning. The Wildcats scored two, but Mayer was able to get out of the jam and get the Wolves the win. She finished giving up two earned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Â
Six different Wolves accounted for WOU's six hits in the contest – including doubles by
Logan Carlos,
Natalie Willoughby and Kahele.Â
Game two got a bit wild as the Wolves trailed 7-1 entering the bottom of the sixth before exploding for six runs - capped by a
Katelyn McGough two-out, two-run double to tie the game 7-7.
The score remained that way until the 10th inning when the international tiebreaker rule (a runner starting on second base) went into effect. WOU got out of the top of the 10th thanks to another strong inning in relief from
Chelsea Smith and had
Nicki Derrick start its half of the inning on second. A one-out sac bunt by
Victoria Zimmerman moved Derrick to third base before Valdes on a full count drove a ball into the gap in left center to score Derrick and win the game for WOU.
Again no player had more than one hit for the Wolves but McGough and
Baylie Kahele had two RBI apiece while
Logan Carlos scored two runs and drove in a run to go along with Valdes' game-winning RBI.
Smith got the win in relief, going seven innings and giving up two runs on one hit with 12 strikeouts and four walks.
The two teams play another doubleheader starting noon Saturday at WOU Softball Field.
