COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team used two goals from Chloe Smith - including one in the final minute - and some notable defense to overcome UC Colorado Springs on Thursday night at Mountain Lion Stadium. The win over the Mountain Lions gives the Wolves a 3-0 overall record to begin the season.
The Wolves kicked off the game with an aggressive start, as Chloe Smith netted a goal in the fourth minute. The Wolves kept the pressure on as they finished the first half with a total of seven shots to the Mountain Lion's two. In the 15th minute, UCCS had a chance to tie the game with a penalty kick, but Sophia Pierce would make the save.
The Wolves would begin the second half in another aggressive fashion, having three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes. It wasn't until the 66th minute mark that UCCS would have their first shot in the second half. UCCS tied the match at 1-1 with a goal at the 76th minute mark.
In the 90th minute, Elizabeth Parker found Chloe Smith, who scored a go-ahead goal to put them up 2-1. It's the second contest in a row Smith - who was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Week -Â has scored two goals.
The Wolves outshot the Mountain Lions, 11-8, and WOU had seven shots on goal compared to four for UCCS. Sophia Pierce finished the game with a total of three saves.
The Wolves will travel in Arcata to play Cal Poly Humboldt on 6 p.m. Saturday.
