Ocampo Navarro goal, tough back line lead No. 25 Wolves past WWU in GNAC opener

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The 25th-ranked Western Oregon men's soccer team began GNAC play with a gutsy 1-0 win over Western Washington on Thursday afternoon at WOU Turf Field.

The Wolves (5-1-1 oveall, 1-0 GNAC) - who moved their unbeaten streak to six and their home unbeaten streak to nine matches - and Vikings (2-3-2, 0-1) were locked in a 0-0 tie until the 36th minute when WOU was awarded a free kick near the sideline even with the top of the penalty box. Marcus Vazquez crossed it in and it was punched out by WWU keeper Charlie Dyer - but the ball bounced to Yahir Ocampo Navarro roughly 40 yards out - and on a bounce - struck the ball into the left side of the goal.

The Wolves held on from there, limiting WWU to three shots on goal - all saved by Andre Schlaefli.

WWU took more shots than WOU (9-8), but the Wolves put seven of their eight shots on target.

The Wolves now hit the road to take on Montana State Billings on Saturday.
