PUEBLO, Colo. --- It would be easy to assume the third-year Western Oregon men's soccer program would just be happy to win the conference, make the NCAA Championship for the first time, gain the experience and bow out gracefully in the opening round.
Well, that's not THESE Wolves.
Ninth-seed WOU stood toe-to-toe with PacWest champion and No. 8-seed Point Loma before scoring a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes to win 2-0 Thursday at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium to pick up the program's first national tournament win and advance to the second round.
WOU faces top seed and host CSU-Pueblo 2 p.m. (PT) Saturday with the winner heading to the Sweet 16.
The Wolves (14-4-1) and Sea Lions (11-4-3) each had their chances throughout the first 70 minutes, though WOU started finding its stride from the get go in the second half after PLNU possessed the ball 57 percent of the first half.
The turning point came in the 70th minute when
Abraham Villalobos was chasing down a ball on the break sent accurately by
Alexis Luna, beating the furthest back PLNU defender before Villalobos was yanked down violently from behind. A red card was issued - giving the Wolves a man advantage.
WOU patiently waited for its chance, and it came in the 80th minute when
Nathan Jimenez drove toward the goal, but his shot was blocked. However, it
Evan Huber tracked it down in the middle of the box, spun around and booted it in to make it 1-0 Wolves. It was Huber's third goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Jimenez found
Jacob Garcia on the left side near the corner before he booted a beautiful cross that Jimenez ran and sent a powerful one-touch past the keeper to make it 2-0 Wolves. It was Jimenez's first goal of the year.
WOU outshot the Sea Lions 11-8 (including 4-2 on shots on goal).
Andre Schlaefli made a pair of saves for his fifth clean sheet of the season.
