MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team had all the momentum after surging back from a 15-point deficit in less than three minutes to tie it up with 13th-ranked Saint Martin's with 5:01 left.
But the Saints were able to hold off the Wolves as a
Jason Gallant game-tying 3-pointer with less than five seconds remaining was off the mark and the Wolves fell 83-79 Saturday night at a rowdy New PE Building.
Down 70-55 with 7:38 remaining, WOU went on a 15-0 run for the next 2:38 - including four steals by the Wolves - as a bucket by
Jason Gallant with 5:01 tied the game at 70.
SMU broke the streak with a 3-pointer at the 3:38 mark and wouldn't trail again, but WOU got as close as two points after a pair of Gallant free throws with 30 seconds left. SMU split a pair of free throws and the Wolves had a chance to tie, but a 3-pointer missed the mark.
Gallant led the Wolves with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Carson Frincke had 23 points - going 5-for-11 from 3-point range - to go along with three steals and three rebounds.
Kris Cook hit double figures with 10 points.
The Wolves hit the road next as they play at Montana State Billings on Thursday.
