KANE'OHE, Hawaii --- The Western Oregon softball suffered a pair of tough losses in getting swept by Hawaii Hilo, 5-4 and 4-3, on Saturday at Howard Okita Field.
The Wolves (3-7) fell behind the Vulcans (4-1) 4-1 after the first inning but tied it in the sixth inning on RBI singles from
Victoria Zimmerman,
Chelby Smalley and
Kate Ronning. But UHH scored in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
Mackenzee Collins entered in relief in the first inning and went the final 6.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and six walks. At the plate, no Wolf had more than one hit with Smalley finishing with two RBI.
In game two, it appeared the Wolves may turn the tables on the Vulcans as RBI singles by Zimmerman and Smalley in the top of the seventh gave WOU a 3-2 lead. But UHH hit a one-out, two-run homer to win it.
Nicki Derrick got the start, going four innings and giving up two runs on nine hits with one walk.
Alivia Holden picked up the loss, going 2.1 innings and giving up two runs on two hits with two walks. In an odd stat - neither team struck out in the game.
At the plate for WOU, Zimmerman went 3-for-3 with a run, RBI and stole base while
Aaliyah Gaboriault also went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI.
The Wolves close out play in Hawaii Sunday with a doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific starting at 2 p.m. (PT).
