Pitching leads WOU to handing #16 WWU first loss, defeating Saint Martin's on Saturday in Lacey

LACEY, Wash. --- The Western Oregon softball team used stellar pitching performances from players on the opposite end of the experience spectrum as the Wolves handed 16th-ranked Western Washington its first loss, 2-1, before defeating Saint Martin's 3-1 on Saturday in non-GNAC contests at Saints Field.

WOU (7-7 overall) true freshman Alivia Holden in her first career start silenced the Vikings' bats in game one, not giving up an earned run while allowing six hits with three strikeouts and four walks to put a halt to WWU's (13-1) 13-game win streak - the best start in program and GNAC history.

In her 72nd collegiate game in the circle, redshirt senior Mackenzee Collins in game two took a no-hitter into the final inning before coming away with the two-hitter - giving up one run while striking out six and walking three.

But it wasn't easy for WOU as it trailed in game one to the Vikings 1-0 heading into the sixth inning. The Wolves got their first hit of the game when Chelby Smalley hit a one-out single to center. Natalie Willoughby followed with a double to right center to put runners on second and third. Karly Tiedeman hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Smalley and tie the game. The clutch hit from Lexi Carlos as she hit a two-out single to right that went off the glove of a diving Viking out fielder to score Willoughby and give WOU the lead.

Holden then closed it out, including working around a lead-off double in the seventh inning with a pair of foul outs and a groundout to end the game.

In the second game against the host Saints, it was WOU taking an early lead as a Carlos sacrifice fly in the second gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Smalley added a run for WOU in the fifth with an RBI single while Bella Valdes in the 10th pitch of her at-bat hit a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.

Aaliyah Gaboriault, Valdes and Smalley each went 2-for-4 for WOU.

The Wolves open GNAC play at home next week as they host Central Washington for a four-game series starting with a doubleheader 11 a.m. Saturday.
