IRVINE, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team pounded out 14 hits and got solid performances from the circle in defeating Chaminade 3-2 Sunday morning at its final game of the Concordia Kickoff at Great Park.
The Wolves (2-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back.
Victoria Zimmerman got the rally going with single through the left side. An error by Chaminade (0-4) put runners on the corners with one out. After a groundout put runners on second and third, Zimmerman scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0. Freshman
Hope Bodak in her first collegiate at-bat stroked a single to left to score
Kate Ronning to make it 2-0.
Sydney Conklin followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-0 Wolves.
That was just enough for
Nicki Derrick and
Mackenzee Collins in the circle. Derrick in her first start of the season went five innings and gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks to pick up the win. Collins pitched two perfect innings to get her first save of the season - striking out one.
Conklin finished 3-for-3 with two triples and an RBI. Zimmerman also went 3-for-3 with a run and two stolen bases.
Bella Valdes went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and Bodak - a catcher - finished 2-for-4 in her first start in her collegiate career with a run and RBI.
WOU returns to action Tuesday as it takes on CSU Dominguez Hills in a doubleheader starting at noon before traveling to face Biola for a doubleheader Wednesday starting at 10 a.m.
