MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team kept on cruising Wednesday as the Wolves swept NAIA Corban 5-0 and 10-2 in a doubleheader at WOU Softball Field.
In game one, the Wolves (13-8) - who have won 10 of their last 11 - used a four-run third inning with RBI from
Chelby Smalley,
Maddie Doig,
Sydney Conklin and Carlie Turpen to build a 5-0 lead.
It was more than enough as
Mackenzee Collins and
Erica Soliz combined for the three-hit shutout against the Warriors (1-19). Collins got the win, going four innings and giving up two hits while striking out one. Soliz picked up the save as she struck out six while only giving up one hit (by rule, a pitcher who ends the game pitching at least three innings effectively is awarded a save - no matter the score).
Victoria Zimmerman had her first four-hit game of the season (her sixth game with at least three hits in a game), going 4-for-4 with a run scored.
Kate Ronning, Conklin,
Lexi Carlos and Turpen had two hits apiece in the win.
In game two, scored two in the first (Willoughby sac fly,
Karly Tiedeman RBI groundout) and four in the second (highlighted by a Willoughby two-run homer) to take a quick 6-0 lead. The lead grew to 7-0 before Corban scored a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 7-2. In the bottom half of the inning, however, WOU scored three runs on a Willoughby two-run triple and a Tiedeman RBI single to force the run rule at 10-2.
In the contest, WOU drew 10 walks and stole six bases - both season highs.
Willoughby finished 3-for-3 with a homer, triple, five RBI and two runs. Tiedeman finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while Ronning was 1-for-2 with three runs,
Bella Valdes was 1-for-1 with a run and two stolen bases,
Sophie Franklin was 1-for-2 with a run and two stolen bases and Zimmerman had two runs on a stolen base.
Alivia Holden got the win, going three innings and not giving up a run on two hits with a walk.
The Wolves continue non-GNAC action this week Friday in Hillsboro as they take on Portland State.
