TURLOCK, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team opened the Tournament of Champions with a pair of convincing wins - defeating Cal Poly Humboldt 10-0 in five innings before breezing past Sonoma State 5-1 on Friday.
The Wolves (15-10) in the first game used a six-run first inning on CPH (12-13) to build a lead that wouldn't be threatened - getting a two-run single from
Maddie Doig, a two-run double from
Sophie Franklin, an
Aaliyah Gaboriault RBI single and another run on a Jacks error to make it 6-0. The Wolves scored two more in the second on a
Lexi Carlos two-run single before Carlos again ripped a two-run single in the fourth to make it 10-0.
It was more than enough for freshman
Alivia Holden as she tossed a two-hit shutout with a strikeout and a walk to move to 7-2 on the season while lowering her ERA to 1.31. Since giving up four earned runs in her first two collegiate appearances (4.2 innings), she's given up just four earned runs since over the next 38 innings (0.74 ERA).
At the plate, Carlos finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and a run,
Kate Ronning went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and a stolen base and Franklin was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, a run and a stolen base.
In the second game, the Wolves again would get all the runs they would need in the top of the first as a four-run frame propelled them past Sonoma State, 5-1. In the first,
Maddie Doig got the scoring going with a two-run single to left before two runs scored on an SSU error to make it 4-0. SSU scored in the sixth inning to make it 4-1 before the Wolves scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to make the final 5-1.
It was more than enough for
Mackenzee Collins as the senior didn't give up an earned run while allowing five hits with 11 strikeouts and just one walk. It's the third time this season she's reached double figures in strikeouts as she lowered her ERA to 1.42.
At the plate, Doig led the Wolves by going 2-for-2 with two RBI, a run and two walks. While the Wolves had just five hits in the contest, they drew 10 walks and took advantage of four SSU errors.
The Wolves continue play at the TOC Saturday against San Francisco State (2 p.m.) and Chico State (4:30 p.m.).
