MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team used a pair of first-half goals and a strong defensive effort to beat a quality Hawai'i Hilo squad 2-0 Monday afternoon in the Wolves' home opener at WOU Turf Field.
The Wolves (3-1 overall), who have won three in a row since its season-opening loss, took an early lead when
Michael Divano challenged the keeper's attempt to clear the ball and was successful, knocking the ball toward the goal where he punched it in for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. It's Divano's second goal of the young season.
WOU took a 2-0 lead on the Vulcans (3-1), who received votes in the last national top-25 poll, when
Evan Huber crossed it, and the ball was nearly stopped by the Hawai'i Hilo keeper, but found
Diego Andrade who scored in the 37th minute. It was Andrade's first goal of the season.
From there, the Wolves stayed in control with keeper
Andre Schlaefli picking up four saves in his second shutout of the season.
WOU heads to Colorado for the second time this season as it travels to face Colorado Christian on Friday and Newman University on Sunday.
