MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 28 minutes and made it hold up as the Wolves defeated No. 19 Simon Fraser 2-1 on Thursday at WOU Turf Field.
WOU (9-3-2 overall, 6-2-1 GNAC) jumped out on the Red Leafs (9-2-2, 6-2-1) in just the third minute when
Ally Beavers played a long ball down the left side that
Kaitlin Taylor tracked down and crossed in front of the goal where
Olivia Boger was there to put it away to make it 1-0.
SFU answered with a goal nine minutes later to tie it, 1-1.
However, the Wolves took the lead for good in the 28th minute when a Beavers throw in found its way to
Alyna Slayter who one-timed it into the back of the next to give WOU a 2-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
In the match, WOU took 13 shots with 11 on target while SFU took 16 shots - nine on target. WOU keeper
Bella Lopez finished the match with eight saves.
The victory moves the Wolves into a tie for second place in the conference. GNAC leader and No. 11 Western Washington comes to Monmouth on Saturday as the two teams meet at 7 p.m.Â
