Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wolves beat SFU, 3-1 - sets up chance for GNAC title Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- A flurry of three goals in a five-minute span for the Western Oregon men's soccer team was more than enough to defeat Simon Fraser 3-1 on Thursday at WOU Turf Field and clinch a spot into the GNAC Championships - but more importantly sets the Wolves up for a chance to win the GNAC title (or share it) Saturday.

The Wolves (8-4-4 overall, 5-2-2 GNAC), who are riding a seven-match unbeaten streak and a four-match winning streak, host first-place Western Washington 10 a.m. Saturday at WOU Turf Field. WOU sits tied for second place with Seattle Pacific with 17 points while Western Washington has 19 points (all three have clinched a spot into the three-team GNAC Championships).

The scenarios for Saturday are:
A WOU win and
  • A SPU loss or draw at NNU = WOU outright conference champions (and No. 1 seed and get a bye while WWU and SPU play in the semifinals)
  • A SPU win at NNU = WOU and SPU Co-GNAC Champions, but WOU owns tiebreaker and gets No. 1 seed and bye)
A WOU draw and
  • SPU loss or draw = WWU champions, WOU and SPU play in semifinals
  • SPU win = SPU & WWU co-champions, WOU plays in semifinals
A WOU loss = WWU champions, WOU and SPU play in semifinals

As for Thursday's win, the Wolves and Red Leafs (5-9-3, 4-4-1) were scoreless until Eli White scored his first goal as a Wolf after knocking in his own shot attempt that was saved by the keeper in the 29th minute.

In the 31st minute, Ignacio Brandan crossed the ball to Abraham Villalobos who tapped it to Alex Grignon who ripped the ball into the upper right of the goal to make it 2-0 WOU.

Less than two minutes later, a Michael Divano shot was blocked by the keeper but went right to Brandan who spun around and kicked it in to make it 3-0 in the 33rd minute. SFU scored in the 80th minute to cut the lead to two, but it's as close as the Red Leafs would get.
