Wolves pickup first win of 2025, split Saturday doubleheader at #13 Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. --- The Western Oregon baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader at No. 13 Cal State Monterey Bay, dropping game one, 6-5, before bouncing back and claiming game two, 6-3, at the Otter Sports Complex.

In game one, the Wolves (1-2 overall) scored a pair of runs in the fourth - the first coming off an RBI double by Andre Jackson II, and the other off a sacrifice fly by Owen Bischoff. The Wolves picked up two more runs in the fifth off two RBI singles. Tyler Mohler brought in one on an RBI single down the right line and Jackson II scored another on a single to center, putting the Wolves ahead 4-0.

The Otters (2-1) answered back with three of their own in the bottom half of the fifth before scoring three more in the eighth, taking the lead 6-4. A ninth inning solo home run by Ruban Cedillo cut the Otter's lead to 6-5, but that was as close as the Wolves would get.

Jackson II went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Collin Irwin went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks. Bischoff finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Mohler went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Devin Bell started on the mound for WOU, giving up three earned runs, three hits and two walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings of work. Carson Kruckman got the loss for the Wolves in relief, giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk in 1.2 innings.

In game two, the Wolves quickly jumped ahead in the first, scoring one off an RBI single by Mohler before Trey Nelson knocked in a second, putting the WOU ahead of CSUMB 2-0. In the third, WOU added insurance to their lead when Mohler hit an RBI single to right and Gunner Shiotani scored another on a hit-by-pitch, bringing the Wolves lead to 4-0. WOU added two more in the inning when Cedric Gatter singled to right, putting the Wolves ahead 6-0. The Otters chipped away at the Wolves' lead, scoring one in the third and two in the fourth, making the score 6-3. But solid Wolves pitching kept WOU ahead and secured its first win on the young season.

Mohler finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Gatter went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Nelson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Zane Garvey went 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Josh Johnson got the start and the win for the Wolves, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out two in four innings. Owen Murdock got his first save of the season, striking out two of the three batters faced.

The Wolves take the field again 11 a.m. Sunday, wrapping up their four-game road series with Cal State Monterey Bay.
