Wolves edge Alaska in season finale

MONMOUTH, Ore --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team capped its season with a 77-76 win over Alaska on Senior Day Saturday at New PE Building.

The Wolves (9-17 overall, 5-13 GNAC) trailed for much of the contest to the Nanooks (6-20, 1-17) until the fourth when a pair of Natalie Brown baskets and a Bella Pedrojetti jumper gave WOU its biggest lead of the game at 62-56 with 7:27 left.

The score was tied at 68 with less the four minutes left when a Mya India Thomas basket put the Wolves up 70-68 with 3:14 left. WOU led 72-71 with less than 30 seconds left when Brown got a key offensive rebound and was fouled with 23 seconds left - sinking both free throws to give the Wolves a 74-71 advantage.

The Nanooks hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to make it 74-73 Wolves before Enid Vaifanua was fouled three seconds later and split a pair of free throws to give WOU a two-point lead. After an Alaska timeout, Pedrojetti - the team's lone senior - stole the ball and was fouled with two seconds remaining. She drained both to make it a four-point game before Nanooks hit a 3 at the buzzer.

Five WOU players finished in double figures with Brown going for a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Vaifanua had 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists, Pedrojetti in her final game had 12 points, Ciona Wells had 11 points, four assists and three steals and Salma Youngblood had 11 points and six rebounds.
