MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team used a late go-ahead home run by
Maddie Doig and a strong outing in the circle from
Kennedy Abbas to take game two 4-1 after dropping the first game 14-3 Saturday at WOU Softball Field.
The Wolves (12-19 overall, 5-5 GNAC) used some two-out magic to get the fifth inning rolling in game two against the Red Leafs (14-17, 5-5).
Isabelle Lewis worked a walk with two out to bring up Doig. The senior from just down the road in Dallas took a 2-2 pitch and deposited over the left-center field wall to send her teammates into a frenzy and give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
Â
It was enough for Abbas who found ways to get out of multiple jams - leaving 10 SFU players stranded throughout the course of the game - as she went the distance, giving up a run on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk to lower her ERA to 3.74 on the season.
WOU did pick up a pair of insurance runs in the sixth thanks to an SFU error and a
Kate Ronning RBI single.
The Wolves had six hits by six different players in the contest.
In game one, the Wolves cut SFU's 3-0 lead to one as senior
Lexi Carlos hit a two-run homer - the first of her career (171 at-bats and 67 games up to that point) - to make it 3-2. But the Red Leafs pulled away with a four-run fourth.
Doig went 2-for-3 with an RBI to go along with Carlos' two-run homer.
Abby Stansbury got the loss, going 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs (only three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks.
These two teams close out their four-game series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
