Wolves fall twice at Sonoma State on Wednesday

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team lost to Sonoma State 5-3 and 9-1 (five innings) on Wednesday at Seawolf Softball Field.

The Wolves (12-25) jumped out to a 2-0 in the first game on the Seawolves (21-18) thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from Lexi Baumgartner and Lauren Mauer in the top of the second.

The score remained that way until the fifth when SSU scored three in the inning - the last on a WOU error - to take a 3-2 lead. The Seawolves added two more in the sixth before a Kate Ronning RBI double in the seventh made it 5-3 with one out. The Wolves put the tying run on base after an Isabelle Lewis walk before a strikeout and fly out ended the game.

Mauer finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI and Ronning was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Kennedy Abbas picked up the loss, going the distance and giving up five runs on nine hits with three walks.

In game two, WOU again took an early lead - this time on a first-inning RBI single by Ronning to score Zimmerman (who opened the inning with a double). However, SSU scored seven runs in the third to take the lead for good and two more in the fourth to force the 8-run rule after five.

Ronning was the lone Wolf with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Alyssa Fullmer picked up the loss, going 2.2 innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Jessica Morgan pitched the final 1.1 innings - giving up two unearned runs on a hit with three walks.

The Wolves return to action next Tuesday at D-I Portland State in Hillsboro.
