MONMOUTH, Ore. --- Western Oregon baseball's
Devin Bell and
Shane Bailey combined to toss a one-hitter in game one while the Wolves bounced back from early deficit in game two to take two from Saint Martin's 4-1 and 6-3 Saturday at WOU Baseball Field.
WOU (7-16 overall, 4-10 GNAC) in game one scored a run in the first on a
John Oleson sac fly and another in the second on a
Zane Garvey RBI single to make it 2-0 Wolves. Garvey added a two-run double in the sixth to make it 4-1 after the Saints (1-28, 1-12) scored a run in the fourth to cut the WOU lead to one.
Bell went seven innings to pick up his third win of the season, giving up a run on one hit with nine strikeouts and five walks. Bailey picked up his first save of the season by tossing two scoreless innings - not giving up a hit while striking out two and walking two.
Garvey paced the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Collin Irwin went 3-for-5 while
Trey Nelson and
Danner Salisbury scored two runs apiece.
In game two, SMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before WOU answered back with four in its half of the inning thanks to an Irwin two-run double, an Oleson sac fly and an
Andre Jackson II RBI triple. The Wolves added another in the second on a Garvey sac fly before capping their scoring in the sixth on a Salisbury RBI on a squeeze bunt.
Irwin finished 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run and Jackson II went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI while adding a stolen base.
Josh Johnson bounced back after a rough first and tossed three scoreless innings to pick up the win - going four innings and giving up three runs on four hits with a strikeout and five walks.
Bryce Bond picked up the save - going the final three innings and not giving up a run, just one hit and striking out three.
The teams square off again in a doubleheader noon Sunday to close out the series.
