Wolves blank CWU twice to sweep GNAC-opening doubleheader in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team got shutouts from Kennedy Abbas and Abby Stansbury to open GNAC play Friday with 5-0 and 1-0 wins over Central Washington at WOU Softball Field.

In the first game, the Wolves (8-13 overall, 2-0 GNAC) picked up all the runs they would need in the first when Isabelle Lewis drove home Aaliyah Gaboriault with an RBI single to right to make it 1-0 over the Wildcats (2-14, 0-2).

WOU added a run in the third on a Kate Ronning RBI single before Lauren Maurer drove in a run on a fielder's choice in the sixth followed by a two-run single by Madelynne Hommel to make it 5-0.

Abbas, a sophomore from The Dalles that transferred from Eastern Arizona, picked up her second shutout and fifth complete game of the season - giving up five hits while striking out six and walking two. It moves her ERA down to a team-best 3.90

Ronning finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run while Hommel went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The second game was a scoreless battle heading into the bottom of the sixth when the speedy Zimmerman singled to left, moved to second on a ground out and scored a batter later on a two-out RBI single to center to make it 1-0.

Stansbury was stellar in the circle for WOU, retiring the final seven batters she faced on her way to a three-hit shutout. The junior from Warren, Oregon, who transferred from Eastern Nazarene struck out three and walked three in her second-straight shutout after tossing a one-hitter against Clarion on Sunday.

WOU has won seven of its last nine games and looks to keep the momentum rolling Saturday when it closes out its series with CWU with a doubleheader at noon at WOU Softball Field.
