BILLINGS, Mont. --- The Western Oregon softball team split a doubleheader with Montana State Billings, dropping game one 13-5 before winning game two 9-5 Friday at Avitus Group Stadium.
In the second game, the Wolves (13-33 overall, 5-13 GNAC) held a 4-3 lead on the Yellowjackets (13-25, 8-10) before a solo homer by
Lexi Baumgartner in the fourth and a two-run homer by
Lauren Mauer in the fifth gave the Wolves a 7-3 advantage.
MSUB answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the lead to two, but a
Maddie Doig RBI double and an
Isabelle Lewis RBI single in the seventh game made the final 9-5.
The Wolves pounded out 18 hits in the game with Baumgartner going 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and a run, Lewis and
Brooklyn Schneidt each went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run while Mauer,
Victoria Zimmerman and
Aaliyah Gaboriault had two hit s apiece.
Kennedy Abbas got the win, going the distance and giving up five runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
In the first game, MSUB jumped out to a 12-0 lead after two innings and eventually forced the run rule in the fifth.
Schneidt went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Lewis was 2-for-3 with a run, Mauer was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run and Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
WOU closes out the season next week at Saint Martin's.
