Wolves pick up key doubleheader sweep of MSU Billings on Friday

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got just what it needed to keep its GNAC postseason hopes alive as the Wolves took two from Montana State Billings, 2-1 and 12-4, Friday afternoon at WOU Baseball Field.

WOU (14-24 overall) moved to 10-16 in GNAC play with the wins - now two games back of Central Washington for the third-and-final spot in the GNAC Championships as the Wildcats sit at 13-15 and are not playing conference games this weekend. The Wolves can move within a game of CWU with two more wins over second-place MSU Billings on Saturday with four games left on the schedule - WOU playing at last-place Saint Martin's and CWU traveling to take on MSUB. The Wildcats do own the tiebreaker over WOU, so the Wolves will have to finish ahead of CWU in the standings to take the third spot in the tournament.

As for Friday's games, Devin Bell again shined on the mound for WOU in game one - going eight innings and giving up a run on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks - to help the Wolves defeat the Yellowjackets (27-15) 2-1. Bell got all the support he needed in the first two innings as John Oleson rippled a first-inning RBI single before Zane Garvey came through with an RBI single in the second to make it 2-0.

WOU's Bryce Bond picked up his third save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth. The appearance was the 63rd of his career - tying the school record held by Lindsay McCargar (1999-2002). The save is also the 12th of his career - tying him for third on the WOU all-time list.

Oleson led the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI while Tyler Mohler and Collin Irwin each went 2-for-4.

In the second game, WOU used a six-run first inning to pull away early and never look back for the 12-4 win.

Oleson once again was 3-for-4, this time with three RBI and two runs. Owen Bischoff finished 3-for-4 with three runs, a double and a stolen base, Irwin was 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs and a double and Garvey was 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and a stolen base.

Jacob Memmott picked up the win, going five innings and giving up four runs on 10 hits with a strikeout and a walk. Shane Bailey tossed a scoreless final two innings for the Wolves.

The teams close out the series starting noon Saturday at WOU Baseball Field. The Wolves will have their Senior Day ceremony starting at 11:30 a.m.
