Box Score NAMPA, Idaho--Western Oregon and Northwest Nazarene came into today's Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer match-up tied for second place in league play.
90 minutes later, they remain tied with each other after a Saturday afternoon scoreless (0-0) tug-a-war at the NNU Soccer and LAX Field. The Wolves and the No. 22 nationally ranked Nighthawks are now both 2-1-2 in GNAC play. NNU is 7-2-5 overall and Western Oregon is 5-3-5.Â
Playing their third straight road match, the Wolves fought hard to stay even in the first half. The Nighthawks outshot their visitors 9-0 in the first 45 minutes, keeping WOU keeper
Austin Valdez busy with four saves.
But the second half was played much more evenly. WOU recorded its first shot two minutes into the second half and then proceeded to share shots and time of possession for much of the final 45 minutes. Both squads had dangerous opportunities. NNU's best shot came with just over 10 minutes left when back-to-back shots inside the box were blocked or saved by Valdez.Â
WOU finally got their first shot on goal with 15 seconds left in the contest, and it almost ended the match.
Erick Chavez fired a shot from the top of the box through traffic that NNU goalkeeper Elijah Brockl made a diving save on.Â
The final stat tally showed an 18-7 shot advantage for the Nighthawks, with a 8-1 margin in shots on goal. WOU had six corner kicks to NNU's five.Â
After three consecutive road matches at St. Martin's, Seattle Pacific and Northwest Nazarene, Western Oregon will now return home for a four-match homestand that begins this coming Thursday against St. Martin's at noon.Â
This was another tough game on the road and like always the guys fought hard and earned some precious points in the road," said WOU head coach
Andrew May. "We look forward to being back at WOU the next couple games."
